Class Description: Welcome to the exciting world of oil painting! In this introductory class, we will learn about the foundations of oil painting including tools, color mixing, paint application, etc. This class is designed for both beginners with no prior painting experience and those looking to enhance their skills. Throughout the course, emphasis will be placed on cultivating your individual style in a supportive and collaborative learning environment. By the end of the class, you will have gained a solid foundation in the basics of oil painting, allowing you to continue your creativity with confidence!
Supplies to bring to workshop:
*Reference images of something you want to paint
- Small/medium size canvas or panel (around 8x10", 9x12", 11x14", 12x12", 12x16", or 16x20")
- Medium and small flat brushes (sizes ranging from 2-12), small round brush if preferred for details
- Paint thinner (recommend odorless) and small container
- Paper towels or rags
- Palette (can be paper, plastic, wood, or glass)
- Palette knife
- Oil paint colors: Titanium White, Cadmium Yellow, Yellow Ochre, Burnt Sienna, Cadmium Red, Alizarin Crimson, Phthalo or Viridian Green, Phthalo or Prussian Blue, Ultramarine Blue, Burnt Umber, Ivory Black
Instructor: Heather Olsen
Utah artist Heather Olsen honed her skills in classical realism at the Bridge Academy of Art and the Hein Atelier of Art before earning her Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from the University of Utah. Since then, Heather has gained national recognition as an award-winning exhibiting artist. Locally, her paintings have been commissioned by Intermountain Healthcare and Utah Legislature earning widespread media attention. Heather also gained international recognition when she competed and won in the worldwide Art Battle Competition in 2023 and progressed to the National Championship Finals. As an educator, Heather enjoys sharing her expertise through workshops and community art programs, and encouraging the development of aspiring artists. Refund Policy: Participants have 30 days prior to class to notify TAF of changes or cancellations to their registration status to receive a full refund or apply fees to future art class. Closer than 30 days to start of class, registration fees will not be refunded and will be donated to the Timpanogos Arts Foundation.
