A World Full of Music

Saturday, May 27th, 7 pm @ the Valentine Theater

Please take a journey with us to some songs from around the world! Between fun songs about travel, you will find some beautiful gems from countries around the world. Our first stop is to travel across the ocean to the Polynesian islands, where you will hear the song “Tongo.” This piece was used as a work song for rowing. Next, we take a journey to New Zealand for the song “The Wellerman.” This rollicking sea chanty was also a work song used on boats to help sailors move in unison. We continue by flying across mountains and rivers to Israel for the song “Artza Alinu.” This traditional Hebrew folk song is a song of celebration for Jews returning to Israel. The translation reads “We ascended to the Land. We've already plowed and sown too, but we have not yet reaped.” Next, we find ourselves in Zambia for the celebratory piece “Bonse Aba.” The translation from the original Bemba reads “All who sing have the right to be called the children of God.” Our journey takes us next to the United States for traditional African-American spirituals. Each speaks on powerful themes of deliverance that resonated with early slaves. We travel last to Sweden for the powerful hymn “How Great Thou Art.” The original poem was written by Carl Boberg as he observed the peace that came after an intense storm. We finish by rejoicing in the wonderful world we have been given! Thank you for taking this journey with us!
